Teen and Young Adult Leadership & Development

We are actively working on developing our Program Aide (PA) and Leader-in-Training program.

Are you interested in joining us as we build our PA and LIT programs from the ground up? Do you want to share your input and give advice that will be used to grow the PALIT program at KCC? Have you attended our camp at least once?

While these programs are a work-in-progress, we are excited to work with teen and young adult leaders to create and grow our program as well as provide them training, teaching opportunities and experience working with younger campers. This is a great way to help at camp, learn and grow and provide useful input and opinions that will help us make our PALIT program a fun and educational experience for everyone!

Our hope for 2025 is to have enough PAs to justify a unit of their own. They will spend part of their day working in various capacities around camp, helping other volunteers and having fun with younger Girl Scouts. The other part of the day will be spent in a camper capacity with opportunities to swim, boat, do archery and crafts.

LITs will have a specific placement at camp - either in a unit or as a part of our Core Staff (Pack Out, Crafts, Archery, Waterfront, Health, Leadership). They will be working more closely with the campers and spend less time as a student at camp.

All PAs and LITs are honing the skills listed below while working with younger Girl Scouts under the supervision and guidance of older, more experienced adult volunteers.

PAs

  •  Program Aides are 16-17 years old and still in high school
  • In the beginning stages of learning their leadership style
  • Leadership skills are beginning to develop
  • Beginning to develop more mature communication skills
  • Growing their teaching skills

LITs

  •  Leaders in Training are 18-21 years old
  • Recent high school graduate and/or in the first few years of college
  • Leadership style is identified
  • Leadership skills are growing
  • Communication skills have improved but are still in development
  • More adept at teaching
  • Have better recognition of areas in need of personal growth; own up to mistakes

Expectations

All volunteers are expected to hold a current First Aid/CPR certification.

PALITs are included in the camp planning process and are expected to attend our virtual staff meetings (once a month from February-May) and our in-person staff meeting in June.

We require completion of 2 online courses available in gsLearn as well as other

training courses/webinars/videos that will be given throughout the pre-camp season (Feb-July).

What Next?

If you are ready to be a PA,  please email us at kayakcommcamp@gmail.com and request an application. All potential PAs must apply and be accepted into the program. They might be asked to do a Zoom "meet & chat" with one of the Directors. References are required. PAs will get a discounted camp rate and a special party at camp as a thank you for all of their hard work.

If you are ready to be an LIT and you are a known past camper, please fill out the Volunteer Interest Form and we will be in touch. https://forms.gle/A9QLCEthpe9XDhw68
